In the prism below the top layer is composed of four rows of five 1cm
blocks. Therefore the volume of the top layer would be 20 cm (4x5= 20).
                                                                                        3

                                                                       Top Layer

                                                        h=4 cm

                                                        5 cm 4 5

                                        4 cm
                                                                4 groups of 5 cm= 20 cm

                                                                                  3
Since there are 4 layers and each has a volume of 20 cm , the total volume
                                             3
of the prism must be 80 cm .

                                                                                  20 cm

                                                                               + 20 cm

                                                                               + 20 cm

                                                                               + 20 cm

                                  4 layers of 20 cm= 80 cm

                                  OR 4 20 cm= 80 cm
                                        5 4 4= 80 cm 3
Therefore, the volume of any rectangular prism can be found with the formula:

           Volume (V)= Length x Width x Height
