(4-2) Evaluate Algebraic Expressions.
To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute numbers for the
variables and then follow the order of operations.
Evaluate the expression (12+3y) when (y=2)
12+3y
=12+3 (2) (substitule 2 for y)
=12+6 (using order of operations)
=18
Evaluate the expression on for given value of the variable.
a) -9 when = 11 b) 2w+7 when w=10
2
c) p +5 when p= 6 d) 10-3f when f= 3
e) (15- ) ×2 when = 5 f) 6+g÷2 when g= 8
Your Work
a) Find the value of K that makes the expression (2k) less than 7.
Discuss your answer.
b) How much greater is the perimeter of a square with a side
length (6 cm) than a square with a side length of (5 cm)?
